With practice this spiritual enquiry exercise need only take about 30 seconds. Do it in a quiet and private place.
The Exercise
1) Physically adopt the tennis stance, leaning forward with knees bent. Keep your eyes open and use the visualisation from the previous page to enter the “in the zone” state. The Sense of Self will pause and the mind clear of thoughts as the body becomes tensed and primed for instant instinctive reaction. Hold this visualisation for a few seconds…
2) To turn this into a spiritual exercise requires an important extra step: release the visualisation and relax the physical tension, while still in the zone. As the body is no longer primed for instant instinctive reaction what remains is now only pure consciousness.
Quietly look around and observe the world while the Sense of Self is still paused. Enjoy this brief glimpse into what lies beyond the “I”.
After a few seconds the the Sense of Self will automatically spring back into action! With enough practice the experience of pure consciousness can be maintained for a minute or longer.
You only practice the exercise until you get the knack of “stilling the mind”. Once you’ve got the hang of it you’ll find that switching into pure consciousness is effortless. It’s a spiritually uplifting high that you will want to repeat!
Short experiences of pure consciousness have a cumulative effect that leads eventually to an organic sense of inner peace and happiness.
